Serbia: First biodiesel plant opens
For Personal Use Only
Serbia has opened its first biodiesel plant. The new facility is claimed to be capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of the fuel per annum, about 2% of the country’s annual consumption of fossil fuels. The Victoria Oil refinery in Sid, 100km west of Belgrade and near the Croatian border, will produce biodiesel from locally-sourced rape-seed, sunflower oil and soybean oil.
The plant is expected to produce up to 40,000 tonnes by the end of 2007.
Savo Vukicevic, head of the commercial department at the plant, says the facility will aim to meet the domestic market’s demands, including major transport companies, large farms and refuelling stations, Reuters reports.
The newswire says the plant is the second project in Serbia for the development of alternative fuels.
In September 2006, a group of eight Hungarian companies, a US firm and a German bank began the construction of Serbia’s biggest ethanol power plant.
