Tokyo, Oct. 24 (Jiji Press)–The top leaders of Japan and Germany on Wednesday confirmed close cooperation in the fight against global warming.
In telephone talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda said it is necessary to build an effective international framework on climate change.
Japan hopes to cooperate with Germany to that goal in such events as next year’s Group of Eight summit in Hokkaido, northern Japan, Fukuda said.
Merkel replied that she hopes to work closely with Japan not only on climate change but also on other international issues such as North Korea and U.N. Security Council reform.
Fukuda said he is making the utmost effort to pass a bill to allow the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force to continue its refueling operations in support of the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.
Merkel said that Germany highly appreciates the effort.
