CANADA – Nuclear Proliferation SCORE: 1

The 2011 G8 Declaration ‘Renewed Commitment for Freedom and Democracy’ highlighted the importance of discussing issues relating to nuclear proliferation. Specifically, G8 leaders commended the ratification by the United States and the Russian Federation of the new START Treaty and noted that the treaty’s entry into force was significant for the overall progress of disarmament.

The G8 called for the creation and subsequent implementation of a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty. It encouraged all States who are participants in the Conference on Disarmament to build on the existing work of the CD/1864 programme by initiating “substantive” negotiations on a Treaty to ban the production of “fissile material for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices (FMCT).”

Therefore, Canada is awarded a score of 1 for the G8’s acknowledgement of all of Canada’s priorities in the area of nuclear proliferation.
