EU – Climate Change: 0.25

The EU has received a score of 0.25 for its priorities on climate change, which included a commitment to increase funds available for Research and Development on green technology to promote job growth, a statement that enables trade in green technology, and support for adaptation programs in developing countries. The G8 did not commit any new funds for climate change initiatives, indicating that it continues to support many existing initiatives, including fast track financing for developing countries, the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Group to identity public and private financing, and the Toyako commitments to improve technology in carbon-capture and storage. The G8 Muskoka Declaration noted the importance of reducing tariffs and non-tariff barriers to promote sharing of clean-energy technology, however did not indicate any further funding towards research and development.
The statements made on climate change do not indicate any new funding nor does the G8 Muskoka Declaration make a stronger statement than previously expressed at other international forums. The G8 maintained a firm consensus on climate change and reiterated their support for existing resources and mechanisms.
