France: African Partnership for Development
Prospects
The invitation of several African leaders to the Deauville Summit illustrates President Sarkozy’s desire to hear more African voices in the global governance arena. This in itself creates a forum in which leaders of G8 nations are able to hear the perspectives of African leaders firsthand and can potentially yield to viable solutions to longstanding development problems. Pressing security issues such as the instability in Somalia and the conflict in Sudan are expected to be discussed as well; however, aid and aid effectiveness have been prominent features on the G8 communiqué —this is likely to be true for the Deauville Summit communiqué as well.
