Summit Studies

Summit Studies Overview

Each year, prior to the G8 Summit, the G8 Research Group completes two reports in preparation for our work at the summit itself. These are: an Issues Assessment Report and a Country Assessment Report. Information on each individual report follows:

1)     Issues Assessment Report: this report examines priority issues that will likely appear on the Summit agenda, as set by the G8 member holding the Presidency that given year. The goal of the Issues Assessment Report is to identify the objectives set in each issue area by the G8 Presidency and to assess the performance of those objectives at the summit.

 2)    Country Assessment Report: this report examines priority objectives that will most likely appear on each G8 member’s (including the EU) Summit agenda. These are objectives that the G8 leaders will pursue for their respective countries during the summit talks. The aim of producing country reports is to identify the objectives set by each G8 member and assesses the performance of those objectives at the summit.

The Teams: Summit Team & Home Team

Two teams will be created for the summit studies portion of the G8 Research Group’s work. Analysts who apply for positions on the Home Team and/or Summit Team will be expected to complete work towards the summit studies, as well as any compliance work that is still in progress or is outstanding. Information on the duties and responsibilities that each team entails follows:

1)     Summit Team: Summit Team Analysts act as Lead Analysts on a country for the Countries Assessment Report or on an issue for the Issues Assessment Report. As a Lead Analyst you are expected to craft the scoring guidelines and background section for your report, as well as author three reports: two reports on your assigned country or issue, and one towards another Lead Analysts’ assessment report. Lead Analysts also attend the Summit, where they are expected to conduct further research on their reports and capture the results of the Summit through report writing, blogging, twitting etc.

2)    Home Team: Home Team Analysts act as Research Analysts on a country for the Countries Assessment Report or on an issue for the Issues Assessment Report. As a Research Analyst you are expected to author one or two reports and report to a Summit Team analyst who will be your lead.
