Russia – Regional Security SCORE: +1
All three of Russia’s regional security objectives have been addressed in the Deauville Communiqué. Russia, along with its counterparts, will continue to promote “stable, peaceful and sovereign Afghanistan…based on the principle of non-intervention.” Additionally, Russia along with other G8 members have reaffirmed their commitment to work together to eradicate terrorism and that the path to it will be based on “security and development-oriented initiatives and on full respect for human rights.” Finally, the G8 has succeeded in adopting a unanimous front on the situation in North Africa and the Middle East in regards to recent uprisings. The G8 has agreed to support “democratic reform” and to respond to the “aspirations for freedom, including freedom of religion, and empowerment, particularly for women and youth.” Hence, Russia is awarded a score of +1.
